The stars shot rapidly across the winter sky. The spectacle unfolding infront of the boys' eyes was magical. He smiled to himself, everyother night he would've be the same young boy he was everyother night, but tonight, he was the King of the world, with the heavens dancing at his whim. The stars continued to sprint across the sky, until with one last wink, the last star dissapeared into the darkness. Smiling happily the young boy skipped down the rocky ledge and returned to the path that would lead him home. The snow along the path crunched beneath his feet, and the subtle mist from his breath floated carelessly into the night. When the boy returned home, he found his mother in her usual place, sitting in a rocking chair facing the window. He never knew why his mother 'looked' out the window, as she was blind. Hearing him enter, she turned and smiled to him, "So? how was it?" she inquired. "It was wonderful Mama, I wish you could've seen it." she smiled as his response, "Oh, I'm sure I will someday." The boy laughed, "I hope so Mama." The young boy went about his chores, and began to prepare dinner. As he was stirring the stew, he turned to his mother. "Mama, where do stars come from?" the boy asked. His mother smiled, "Well, no one really knows." she replied. "Oh... I see..." The boy turned back to the stew and sighed. "But - some people tell me that they are the spirits of the ones you love, looking down on you from the heavens." "That sounds nice Mama, but why were the ones tonight falling down?" She giggled softly, "Well, they fall when the ones they are looking down on grow up, to show them a last farewell." The young boy was happy with the explanation, and returned to the task at hand. - Many years have passed since the night of the falling stars. The young boy has grown into a man. His mother had long since passed away, and as an adult, he was beginning to build a life of his own. He had met a beautiful girl, and fallen in love. Their marriage was an event unlike any other, and in the following months, their first child was born. The man was happy. One night, the man awoke to a strange feeling. He looked out the window to see fresh snow falling. covering the ground and the surrounding forest. Pulling on his warm clothes and his boots, he left the warmth of his home, and made his way into the snow. Climbing up that same rocky ledge, he laughed to himself. It had seemed so much bigger to him when he was a boy. Pushing through the brush, he found the clearing that he had sat in when he was younger. As his gazed up into the snowy sky, a clearing in the clouds proudly displayed the starry sky. As he continued to watch, he was stunned. Through the clearing, he could once again see the dancing of the heavens shown by falling stars. A tear crept down his cheek as he smiled to himself. "I'll see you again, Mama. When I too fly up, and touch the stars." Shindoh | |
